At that time, gold lamé, a material woven of glittering gold metallic like thread, was used by entertainers and pop stars and was very expensive.  Claude thought that it would enhance the image of the team and make the jumpers more visible in freefall.     Alas, when the suits were used on a display jump, they acted as if they were camouflage, with even experienced skydivers finding it hard to see the jumper attached to his smoke trail.   So the jumpsuits were only used for show on the ground and more colourful jumpsuits selected to jump at displays.
